Bill’s Steakouse & Saloon
1013 SW 89th Street
Oklahoma City, OK 73139

There used to be a place called Bill’s Island Grill just a couple miles down the road from me. The place was terrible. I went twice and the food was short of enjoyable and the service was just as bad. But for whatever reason, the place was always busy. The parking lot was filled with cars nearly every night of the week. I think most of them were going for whatever alcoholic beverage was on special that night. Surely they were not going for the food. As busy as they seemed, the place closed down a couple months ago.

There were some rumors about what kind of place might go in at this particular location, and I was hoping for a favorite of mine that recently closed down here on the Southside of town. It turned out to be a false hope and now the place has reopened as “Bill’s Steakhouse & Saloon.” I know what you are thinking, because I thought the same thing, and no, the same Bill does not own and operate the steakhouse as did the island grill. I would have thought it best to completely change the name, but nobody asked me.

The new décor seemed to be a bit dated. There were signs all around the dinning room such as:

We don’t serve women here
you have to bring your own!

Avoid fruits and nuts.
You are what you eat.

It is better to spend money like there’s no tomorrow than to spend tonight like there’s no money.

I think you get the idea. The music was good, until they played a Nickelback song. The service was acceptable, but no one acted too thrilled that you were visiting this new eatery. Nobody made suggestions when we were looking over our menus, but we were served quickly and I guess that is what people deem to be most important when they are hungry.

Yes, it is a steakhouse. No, we did not order a steak. They only had a few steak dishes on the menu. The New York Strip dinner was priced at $12.99 and the T-Bone steak was $15.99. I had the chicken fried chicken dinner. It came with one side and a piece of toast and was priced at $6.99.

Chicken Fried Chicken
After consulting with some of my close friends, I think I am in the minority here on this one, but I felt a little cheated right as soon as I got my plate. I ordered the chicken fried chicken thinking that I would get actual fried chicken. Nope, I got a chicken fried chicken steak. You may have read the menu and understood that to be what you were going to get. I did not. My fault. The actual chicken fried chicken steak was really good. It was a thick piece of chicken steak and the breading was good and crispy.

I would bet my next paycheck that they made their white pepper gravy from a packet. No way that stuff was made in house. That much was obvious.

Fried Okra
This was good. There was nothing special about it. It was just some good fried okra, the way that it should be. It was not overly salted or burnt like some people tend to cook it. Disclaimer: They charge you an extra $0.75 to get fried okra! Ridiculous.

Mashed Potatoes
Parker Lepley got the mashed potatoes and I could tell that he was disappointed. He said that they were plain, and I would agree. In my family my granny was a really good cook, especially when it came to making those homemade buttermilk biscuits. Grandma, on the other hand, was not such a good cook. Her cooking style was a bit quirky, and to be truthful, grandpa did a lot of the cooking in that house. These mashed potatoes at Bill’s were more like what you would find at my grandma’s dinner table. They most certainly were not something granny would have fed me.

French Fries
Mak Tarpley got the fries with her meal and they were much like the mashed potatoes, leaving much to be desired. They lacked any kind of seasoning, including salt.

You also got a piece of toast with your meal. The toast was good…but then again, how can you mess that up? The sweet tea was somewhere in the middle. It did not have much of a tea taste.

On a scale of 1-10, I am giving this place a 6.

As Parker said, this is a good place to try, but not a place that you would frequent often. If you asked me to go with you, I would not offer up any objections. In the same breathe, if you asked for suggestions, I would not quickly recommend Bill’s Steakhouse & Saloon.

And finally, Bill’s Steakhouse is no steakhouse. Please do not let the name fool you. I will blog about my favorite steakhouse, a real one, at sometime in the near future!

  1. Who ever Tommy is, I think he is full of you know what! I think the food is awesome! He must be a yankee from NYC. I thought the gravy was very good.

Just a locals opinion, give this place a try, bet you will disagree with “TOMMY”!!!!!!!!!!!!

    1. I’m full of Jesus, Eddie! Thanks for the read and comment. Even here, you’re entitled to your own wrong opinion. I’m just happy to hear someone is enjoying that place. I’ve been to NYC several times, but I’ve been an Okie all my life! As a local, what’s your top three must go to eateries here in OKC?
