For the most part, I feel as though I am an open book. I am outspoken and will tell you what I am thinking. Through conversations, these are some of the things people seem most surprised about when they hear. This is not an all inclusive list, I am sure I left some things out. Everyone knows that I am a very traditional conservative who loves the church, the elderly, and the USA. People are also aware of my supreme love for Jennifer Aniston and Kari Jobe. They know that I drive a black Ford Escape with some sort of American window decal, currently a James Lankford for Senate sticker. These things they know.

These things, they probably do not know:

  1. I recycle.
People know me as the ultra conservative and I am. Unfortunately, people associate recycling with being a liberal. I am not a liberal. Whether it be at school, work, or home, I will go out of my way to recycle some paper or one of the few water bottles that I will drink from on any given day. Just this past week I convinced my dad to clean out the recycling bin so that we could begin using it for its intended purpose. Boom! I will inconvenience myself, but I am not the person who follows others around digging through their trash to see what they forgot to recycle. That is rude. Recycling is a personal choice that each of us must make.

  2. I do not like leading.
Leadership roles seem to flow my way and I am often put in charge of things. I am okay with that, but it is definitely not my preference. I would much rather be following someone, or to have someone telling me what to do. My spiritual gift is service, and that is what I want to be doing.

“Just as the Son of man did not come to be served, but to serve…” Matthew 20:28

  3. I do not know anything about sports.
With the exception of football, I really do not have a clue. Whether it be baseball, basketball, or whatever else it is that they call a sport nowadays, I know nothing. I never grew up watching sports with my dad or my brothers. I made an effort to start watching Oklahoma football around the time I was in high school, and now I follow the Denver Broncos. Although I fully support the Oklahoma City Thunder, I do not understand the play calling. I do not know the positions. I am very slowly picking up on things.

  4. I frown.
People regularly comment on the fact that they always see me smiling, and that is probably true. I am a happy person! However, I do not smile unless I am genuinely happy. I do not put on fake smiles for anyone. Our teachers always told us that it takes more muscles to frown that it does for us to smile. I do not believe that. Not even a little bit. In fact, I believe that is a lie straight from the pits of hell.  My natural disposition is to be frowning. That is what I feel most comfortable doing.

  5. I do not know my biological father.
I do not have a relationship with him. Although I am named after him, I do not know him. Before I was two years of age, he was imprisoned for robbing a 7-Eleven. I believe he was released when I was nineteen years old. In that seventeen year span, I received one birthday card. Thankfully, the Lord gave me with another dad who would provide for me, care for me, and love me like his own. This guy came along when I was four.

  6. I would rather work alone.
Things get done the right way when you do them yourself, or at least it seems that way. Maybe it would be more accurate to say things get done the way I want them to when I do it myself. I am much more picky than most people around me. I am not seeking to just get by. I do not aim to do the least amount as possible. I want to stay busy, and people can hinder that at times. Do not misunderstand, I love being around people. When I am not working, I want to be around my friends. I never want to be alone as far as my social life is concerned, but when given a task, I would almost always rather do it alone. I want perfection. In my previous job, I was head baker. Many times I would be called in to help a store or to prepare for a show. I could do the stuff, no problem. But I absolutely hated training people or working with someone when baking. The breads needed to be golden brown, not some pale color. The cookies needed to be underbaked by a minute or so. The cream cakes needed to be baked a little longer, to insure they kept their shape when glazed. The icing for the donuts needed to be at just the right temperature, so as to not drip down the side of the donut. Nobody else I worked with seemed to understand these small, but very important things.

  7. I am not creative.
I am the kid that was drawing stick figures in school. I am still the kid that draws stick figures. My artistic skills are non-existent. God gave me none.

  8. I do not worry.
With the exception of what I am going to eat for my next meal, I do not worry. This irritates some people because they think I ought to worry about school and financial things, but I do not. I know that in the end, the Lord will provide for me. He has always been faithful, even when I am not. I fully believe that he will continue to be faithful.

  9. I do not like steak.
It is not that I hate steak. I enjoy a nice steak dinner, especially from Cagle’s in Lubbock, Texas. I just do not get all excited like other people. If you give me the option of having a steak dinner or some sort of chicken, I will choose the chicken 99.7% of the time. When my dad grills steak, I always eat it. I love steak! Just not as much as most Americans. If you want to have me over for a steak dinner, please do not let this change your mind. I will gladly come over and enjoy the dinner! Let me put it this way, if I were condemned to die by the State of Oklahoma, my last meal would not include steak. It would be fried chicken, smashed potatoes & gravy, corn, fried okra and a couple of rolls. Oh, and some cold peaches from the can.

  10. I am a twin!
We look nothing alike. We act nothing alike. We do not share any common interests. The only thing that my brother and I share is our last name, Merritt. Growing up, the twin wanted to be a rapper. I wanted to be a minister. He was a huge Obama supporter. I supported McCain. He is about a hundred pounds lighter than me and almost a head shorter. He has facial hair, while I do not. He even shaves his head! My hair falls out naturally.

  1. Tommy, Tommy, Tommy. I take issue with #’s 7 & 9. #7 because I have seen your work. And #9 should say “I do not LOVE steak”, because obviously you do enjoy eating it on occasion. And seriously, peaches out of a can? Who does that? Oh, I forgot. David Gibson does!

    1. Hahaha I cannot eat a fresh peach, but those canned peaches, I can eat all day long….as long as they’re chilled.
